The minister of Malaysia declared: "MALAYSIA WON'T BECOME THE GARBAGE DUMP OF THE WORLD!" and returned 150 shipping containers loaded with plastic waste back to sender... The West.
Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin announced the return of the containers containing 3,700 tons of plastic waste back to sender, originated from 13 countries.
• 43 containers from France
• 42 containers from the UK
• 17 containers from the US
• 11 from Canada
• 37 from the rest of the west
Another 110 containers filled with waste will be sent back in the near future, she said,
• 60 of them to the United States.
After returning the Plastic Waste containers; Yeo declared:
"People dump rubbish in your country, we pay nothing for sending back your trash”
Until 2018, the Western nations shipped most of their plastic waste to China for processing and recycling for years, but were forced to look for new destinations when the Chinese government banned foreign waste imports in 2018.
China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia have all returned shipments of plastic waste to the West in recent months.
